IN PERSON MQS Lecture : The Girlhood of Mary, Queen of Scots – Dr Linda Porter
An illustrated talk revealing the early life of one of history’s most fascinating queens.
Dr Linda Porter presents a richly detailed and illustrated account of Mary Stuart’s early years, from her birth in 1542 to her formative time in France. Crowned queen at just six days old, Mary’s childhood was shaped by political unrest, conflict, and strategic alliances.
This lecture challenges the misconception of Mary as naïve or unprepared, instead presenting her as a highly educated, politically aware, and capable young woman. Exploring her upbringing at the French court of Henri II and Catherine de Medici, Dr Porter reveals how these formative experiences prepared Mary for the immense challenges she would later face ruling Scotland.
This is an in-person event held in The Knight’s Chamber at Peterborough Cathedral
