Online Talk: Moving the Altars: Early Stuart bishops of Peterborough and religious change by Dr Paul Wiggin

Drawing on Eamon Duffy’s influential work The Stripping of the Altars, this talk explores the central role of the altar in the religious upheavals of the English Reformation. Dr Paul Wiggin turns to the seventeenth century to examine how the altar continued to shape religious change, focusing on the actions of bishops in Peterborough and how these developments may have anticipated the Laudian reforms of the 1630s.

Dr Paul Wiggin is Cathedral Historian at Peterborough Cathedral. His research centres on early modern cultural and religious history, alongside a wider interest in the cathedral’s past. Before this role, he taught history for 24 years in secondary schools across the Peterborough area.
