Choristerships & Auditions

Choristerships and auditions at Peterborough Cathedral involve a commitment to daily rehearsals, both before and after school, and services on weekdays and weekends. Choristers receive training in musical and vocal skills, working to a professional standard. Future Voices is a bold new initiative  aiming to secure the future of our choristerships and bring fresh innovation to our choir. Find out more below.

Overview

The benefits of being a Chorister include learning life skills such as self-discipline, responsibility, teamwork, communication, and social skills, alongside musical training. Choristers develop a strong camaraderie and a passion for achieving musical excellence.

Eligibility and Education: Choristers attend The King’s (Cathedral) School, with recruitment typically focusing on boys and girls in school year 2 to begin in year 3, continuing through years 3-8.

Future Voices

Future Voices, a bold initiative running from 7th April to 10th May 2026 is designed to safeguard and amplify the voices of our young choristers, talented children who are both the custodians of centuries-old tradition and the trailblazers of the city’s contemporary cultural scene. These exceptional young performers are not only preserving a historic art form but reimagining it, bringing fresh energy, innovative perspectives, and new audiences to cathedral music.

Future Voices is committed to inclusivity and excellence: every chorister place is awarded solely on musical talent, entirely free from financial barriers. By ensuring access for all gifted children, regardless of background, the Cathedral nurtures diverse voices that reflect Peterborough itself, vibrant, multicultural, and creatively ambitious.

The campaign shines a spotlight on the stories behind the music, the dedication of the choristers, the pride of their families, and the shared joy of communities coming together around extraordinary talent.

By giving today, donors are investing in a choir that is outward-looking, inclusive, and poised to remain a vibrant cultural force in Peterborough for generations to come.

Join us in shaping the future of cathedral music: help Peterborough’s young voices flourish.

Auditions and Events:

  • A “Be a Chorister for a Day” (BACFAD) event is usually held in October for interested children.
  • Voice trials for Year 2 students occur in November, with auditions in 2025 set for week commencing November 10h for placements starting in September 2026.
