See Gaia and take the Cool Food pledge!

Thursday 8 August

Caring for our fragile planet is a major theme of the Gaia exhibition. Therefore, Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) will be enabling visitors to take the Cool Food pledge.

In the UK, food makes up around a fifth of the country's carbon footprint. Globally, the process of cultivating, growing, harvesting and transporting food accounts for almost a third of the world’s carbon emissions. The Cool Food pledge will therefore give visitors to the Gaia exhibition the chance to commit to changing their food habits
– bite-sized actions we can all take to reduce our carbon emissions in order to slow down climate change and help the earth keep cool. These include:

  • Introducing vegetarian meals into your diet
  • Chopping your meat portions in half
  • Making your own meals
  • Introducing dairy-free days
  • Stopping the wasting of bread
  • Reducing food waste
  • Buying local, seasonal and organic food
  • Swapping soft drinks for water
  • Having tea-free days
  • Having coffee-free days

A large TV screen will totalise the commitments made by visitors on a Cool Food Counter. This will show how much carbon and money these new habits will be saving.

There will also be the chance to spend some time talking to the PECT team at various points during the exhibition.
