Bookbinding Workshop

Peterborough Cathedral
Saturday 21 September 2024 10:00 - 16:00

Create 2 handmade books with Shobhna Patel - Japanese stab bound book & Leatherette journal

During this workshop we will explore how to make 2 soft-cover handbound books using traditional bookbinding techniques. All materials and equipment will be provided.

We will begin the workshop by firstly creating an A5 sized Japanese stab bound book, a perfect way for beginners to ease into bookbinding.

We will then move onto creating an A5 sized leatherette journal which features a long stitch combined with chain stitch binding method. This method of stitching means you can open

your book completely flat so it’s great for drawing and writing in.

Throughout this workshop we will look at the essential materials and equipment required in bookbinding. You will learn how to measure, fold, pierce and sew signatures.

By the end of the workshop you will have constructed 2 different handmade books to take home with you to continue your bookbinding journey!

Please arrive at the Visitor and Learning Centre (25 Minster Precincts) at 10am. Tea and Coffee will be available but please bring your own lunch. There will be a short 30 minute break for this.
