Online Talk: 'Monsters of the Sea: Life in a Changing Ocean’

Online
Thursday 15 August 2024 19:30 - 20:30

A fascinating and informative lecture by Professor Meric Srokosz of the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.

Join Professor Meric Srokosz from the National Oceanography Centre, Southhampton as we learn about the impact our changing world has on our precious marine life.

Human use of fossil fuels (oil, coal, gas) is increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which is leading to global warming. This is impacting the oceans, which are warming, becoming more acidic, and in places de-oxygenated, all of which affects life in the sea from the smallest plankton to the largest sea creatures, the so-called “monsters of the sea”. This talk will explore the changes taking place, their effect on sea creatures, and end with a biblical reflection and challenge.

Professor Meric Srokosz is an emeritus fellow at The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton and a former associate director of the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion, Cambridge. His interests include: the ocean’s role in climate, ocean waves, satellite oceanography, the Agulhas and Madagascar current systems, and the interaction of physical and biological ocean processes. With Dr Rebecca Watson, he authored the book “Blue Planet, Blue God: the Bible and the Sea” (2017, SCM)

This talk will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent to all ticket holders.

Tickets: £8pp or £7pp students.
