Thousands flocked to Cathedral’s ‘Made in 2022’ exhibition

Wednesday 8 March

A Peterborough art exhibition highlighting the ups and downs of ordinary life is said to have attracted thousands of visitors during February.

The ‘Made in 2022’ exhibition, which has now officially closed its doors to the public, was held at Peterborough Cathedral from 8 February to 2 March 2023 and displayed over 300 works of art from paintings to sculptures.

It followed on from the success of the ‘Made in Lockdown’ exhibition shown 12 months ago and called on entries that reflected 2022 through the medium of art.

Unsurprisingly, many of the pieces respond to the shock of the invasion of Ukraine, the soaring temperatures and environmental issues, and to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s jubilee followed so closely by her death and funeral.

Organisers believe that there have been around 8,000 visitors to the exhibition in total.

Reflecting on this year’s exhibition, Canon Tim Alban Jones, Vice Dean at the Cathedral, says:

“There is something profoundly moving about seeing so many pieces of art all reflecting back to us the impact of a particularly challenging year. The stories on the cards which explained the artwork have been very powerful indeed.

“The Cathedral has been a magnificent space in which to display the artworks and it is a privilege to have hosted the exhibition here. We are very grateful to Savills for their support for the Made in 2022 exhibition, without which we couldn’t have gone ahead. We would also like to thank the artists whose work has made it possible, and our wonderful volunteers who have helped in so many ways.”

David Goodson, director and head of office at Savills in Peterborough, adds:

“Last year provided many challenges for us all and this exhibition afforded us a chance to reflect on how our local community could express this through arts and crafts.

“As a business with deep-rooted links in Peterborough, we are always keen to support local initiatives and we are proud to have been involved in what has been a deeply cathartic exhibition that has enabled local artists and enthusiasts alike to demonstrate what 2022 meant to them in a very powerful and thought-provoking way.”

The next art exhibition at the Cathedral will be ‘Threads through Creation’ by Jacqui Parkinson, which is a vibrant display of 12 large embroidered textile panels, re-telling the Biblical story of creation. The exhibition runs from 22nd March until 30th April. More information is at www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk or call 01733 355315.
