Peterborough Cathedral is launching a new after-school singing club to run during May and June, especially for children who are in school Year One and aged 5 to 6 years old.
The club will be led by the Cathedral Choir’s singing teacher, Sarah Burston, and will include lots of musical games and activities to introduce the children to pulse, rhythm and pitch, as well as to develop their social confidence.
The sessions will take place in small groups via Zoom initially, between 3.45pm and 4.40pm on a weekday. There will be eight sessions in total and it is recommended that children attend them all. It is hoped that, Covid restrictions permitting, it will be possible to bring the children together at the Cathedral towards the end of the Summer Term.
Tansy Castledine, Director of Music at the Cathedral, said:
“This is such an exciting new start for all those 5 to 6 year old noisemakers out there! They can have fun developing their musical skills and at the same time meet some children from outside their school setting. Enthusiasm is the key thing but the skills they learn could also help to lay a foundation for learning a musical instrument or taking singing lessons in the future.”
Demand is expected to be high for these sessions and we don’t want anyone to miss out, so will run several sessions across a week. There are no barriers to anyone taking part in this new club – all you need is enthusiasm and to be available when there is a session.
